Energy 92.7's new programming

Energy 92.7 has begun to add mixshows to their station. In addition to the "Weekend Kick-Off Mix" mixed by DJ Trevor Simpson at 6pm (Pacific Standard Time) on Fridays, they have added a new mix at 12pm called the "Cardio Mix". This consists of 80's songs, while the former mix consists of current Energy tracks and some new ones not added yet.

And tonight at 8pm, for those who are staying home tonight on New Year's Eve, check out the "Energy Year-End Countdown Mixshow". It will be 4 hours of the biggest songs of 2004. And it will be played again at 12am immediately after it is first aired. This is a must-listen. They may play some songs they didn't get a chance to add to their regular music library. The playlist for this will be posted in a seperate post at this blog tomorrow.

And some new on-air personalities will be added to the station in the coming weeks. Keep checking here for more updates on that. There is a posting on this subject with some more specific details by another blogger. Check it out here.

Energy is starting off the new year on a good note.

Happy New Year folks!

Energy 92.7 "Cardio Mix"

Today at 12pm, Energy 92.7 aired the inaugural edition of their "Cardio Mix." It consisted of 80's dance hits. I heard the full mix, and thought it was pretty good. It has been years since some of the stuff they played has been played in the Bay Area. Songs by M, Dead Or Alive, New Order, Prince, Depeche Mode, Trans-X, Pizzacato 5, Tiffany, and Madonna made up today's edition. This is a good attempt to compete with Wild 94.9 and Viva 105.7 who both have 12 o'clock mixes as well. And for those who can catch the Monterey/Salinas station KDON 102.5, it has that much more competition. The Energy one is good in that they play only older songs during the mix, and that sets it apart from the others. KDON throws in a lot of old school party jams, freestyle, and hip hop in their mix, as does Wild. Freestyle, Latin House, a little trance, and classic House get played on Wild. Viva 105.7's is mostly dance mixes of Latin tracks and some Latin House that Wild plays. All in all, these 4 mixshows are quite good, and bring something different to the table. Take your pick.

What still needs to be done

Energy 92.7 has been able to fill the void that Party 92.7 left easily. It surpassed expectations and has been doing what is necessary to make a lasting impression on the bay area. Their library of music is quite extensive when compared to Party 92.7. New songs have been added on a weekly basis, and they are slowly catching up to what is popular all over the country.

But there are numerous songs they still haven't added. We won't hold our breath waiting for them to add all the songs on the list below. But some of them need to be heard here as they are quite good and could become hits nationally. Some tracks have already become out-of-the-box successes in their native countries. A lot of what is hot in the clubs is being played on the air, but there is a lot that needs to be added. That is what needs to be done in order to stay on the air. In addition to proper marketing, and a strong signal, they have to be playing the music people want to here. Even though many calls have been made to the phone number Energy 92.7 provided on the air, not much has changed.

Specialty programming has already been added, and more is planned in the future. Party 92.7 had exclusive mixes every weekend from internationally-renowned DJ Paul Oakenfold. And there were exclusive mixes by DJ Torque a.k.a. Trevor Simpson, who now is the resident DJ at Energy 92.7. A new mixshow airing every Friday at 6pm (Pacific Standard Time) called the "Energy 92.7 Weekend Kick-Off Mix" has been airing. So far, 2 editions of the one-hour mix have aired. A good blend of current hits, some new future hits, and some recurrents make up the mix. On last Friday's edition on Christmas Eve, dance mixes of Christmas songs were played in the mix. Check out this other blog that keeps track of the playlists of the mixes. The Christmas Eve playlist is the one in red and green colors. Let's see if they will add more mixes done by other DJs. Nothing's wrong with Trevor Simpson. But having multiple DJs would provide some variety as no two DJs mix the same way. And some specialize in different genres of music.

And the official website still needs to be created. There is already a website configured at the web address of www.energy927fm.com, but there is just an animated image there for now. An unofficial website had been online for about a month, but it has since disappeared. There's no known reason for why the unofficial website went away. It doesn't really matter as that website didn't have a disclaimer, and there was questionable security. On the message boards, a poster's IP address was made public. Not just some of it. All of it! That was removed promptly. And the playlist on the site was copied verbatim from another source. No credit given at all. Anyways, this site isn't worth mentioning anymore as it is unavailable now.

Let's hope they'll add the songs listed below in a timely manner.

Fake Energy Stream

On the Radio-Info board, someone mentioned that there is a live internet stream of Energy 92.7 San Francisco. Here is the problem: it is not of Energy 92.7! It even says that it is of KNGY 92.7 The Beat Of The Bay! There are no station ids or imaging. There are dance songs, but there is a gap of about 2 seconds in between each song. And the majority of the songs they play, Energy has not played yet.

Energy 92.7 San Francisco is not streaming yet, so don't use that stream.

Wild is playing "Traffic"!

Yesterday, during the Wild Workout At Noon, on Wild 94.9, they played DJ Tiesto's international big hit "Traffic." It's been a while since they have added a new trance song to the mix (they have added new Latin house tracks). St. John came into the station while Dreena Gonzalez was on the air and suggested that Jose Melendez play "Traffic". He did at the end. Let's hope this is the beginning.

Yes.net

It seems that Yes.net has stopped monitoring Energy 92.7. There have been no songs or times listed for the last 24 hours, and the station has been broadcasting on air as normal. What's going on? It could be that they have stopped monitoring. Or it's down right now. Or it's working but it doesn't list on the web. Hopefully, it will get fixed soon.

Energy 92.7 and WKTU 103.5: The similarities

Okay, WKTU 103.5 is based in New York, but lately the playlist of Energy 92.7 and WKTU has been quite similar. Many of the songs on both playlists are getting the same amount of airplay.

With the balance of the old and the new songs, both stations are quite similar.

Wild 94.9's House Nation

On Wild 94.9's long-running late night/early morning electronic music show House Nation has brought dance music to the bay area even when existing dance stations were unable to deliver. This show is on Wild 94.9 from 1am to 6am on early Saturday mornings.

In its various forms over the years,
House Nation has broke some dance tracks which have gone on to become national and international smash hits. Records like "Professional Widow [Armand Van Helden Mix]" by Tori Amos and "Around The World" by Daft Punk got their start at Wild 94.9, and went on to become staples at dance radio here, and everywhere else.

Countless other songs made their debuts at Wild 94.9 when many other stations would not even take a chance. Alice Deejay's "Better Off Alone" was first spun on
House Nation in October of 1999. Within a week, it became one of the most requested songs. This was a highly influential record as it got played during regular airplay. A pure trance song had not had this kind of airplay ever. Eiffel 65s' hi nrg track "Blue" was one of the few club tracks that was trancey and getting regular airplay. Then the song went on to be played in the same way on other radio stations (in the bay area).

Although they have broken many tracks in the bay area, there are many that they have ignored that went on to be massive hits everywhere else. A perfect example of this is "I See Stars" by Robin Fox. It got played a couple of times on Wild, but that was it. This was a huge hit all over the country.

Lately, they have been playing some tracks that have been hits all over, and some that are hits in the making. Here is their top 25 from to get an idea of what's hot over there.

11.22.2004

quality

During the last month and a few days, it has become more and more obvious about the quality of some of the songs that are played on Energy 92.7. Not to hate on them or anything like that, but some of the CD's of the songs don't seem to be mastered from a good source.

Like Fragma's "Toca's Miracle". It sounds like the vocalist is singing under water. It's not distortion from the radio airwaves. The song may be mastered from an mp3 that was encoded at 128 kbps or lower. Similarly, other tracks like "Just Can't Get Enough" by Depeche Mode, "You Don't Know Me" by Armand Van Helden are mastered from really bad sounding sources also.

Also, one of the versions of "Clocks" by Coldplay (not the hard house one), sounds like the beat added to it is not in sync with it. Towards the end, the Coldplay original and the added beat are starting to seperate and unseperate.

11.20.2004

What's hot this week

During this week, there have been many songs which have recieved a lot of airplay. Janet Jackson's "All Nite (Don't Stop)", Wynonna's "I Want To Know What Love Is", Reina's "If I Close My Eyes", Destiny's Child's "Lose My Breath", Nina Sky's "Move Your Body", "Easy As Life" by Deborah Cox and Kevin Lyttle's "Turn Me On" have gotten the most play this week. In terms of recurrents, Snap!'s "Rhythm Is A Dancer '97" and Information Society's "What's On Your Mind (Pure Energy)" have gotten an unusual amount of airplay.

Some New Developments & Though

An Actual Radio Personality
Yesterday night for the first time, Energy 92.7 has an actual live personality at the station! His name is Trevor Simpson. He gave out the station's phone number to allow listeners to call in and say what they think of the station, and what they are doing. He gave shouts and stuff to those who called in. The phone number is 1-866-534-0927. Normally, it goes to an answering machine that asks you to leave a message that would help the station improve.

What's Getting A Lot Of Airplay

During the last few days, there have been some songs which have earned a lot of airplay. In addition to being a lot of airplay for the station, some of it is quite significant even for the bay area. Janet Jackson's latest "All Nite (Don't Stop)" has been heard at least once every sixty minutes. There are only a couple other stations in the bay area that are even playing this song. Same with Despina Vandi's international smash hit "Gia" which is finally getting heard in the bay area. Better late than never. Christina Milian's dance-leaning hip hop track "Dip It Low" has also been getting a lot of airplay on Energy 92.7 and all over the bay area on 106 KMEL, Wild 94.9, and on 89.3 KOHL. And one recurrent track that has been seeing a gain this week is "Sexual (Li Da Di)[Thunderpuss Mix]" by Amber. This track was a smash hit in the bay area back in 1999 and 2000. It got a lot of play in it's original mix (which on a side note, was the one played on every station, except during the mixshows). When KZQZ 95.7 was around, they played the Thunderpuss Remix of the Amber track heavily in their mixshows, as did Wild 94.9. Wild has started throwing that track in the mix a lot more often than they used to.

Bay Area Exclusives
Energy 92.7 may not have an extensive recurrents catalog from the last five years, but they have a lot of dance tracks from the 90's which got little to no airplay. Sure, some of these tracks were played during mixshows, but not routinely during regular airplay. Here is a sample of some tracks that have been heard lately that were not routinely played in the bay area, but they are now.

Armand Van Helden - The Funk Phenomena

Bad Yard Club - In De Ghetto
Funky Green Dogs - Fired Up!
Haddaway - What Is Love
Billie Ray Martin - Your Loving Arms
Robert Miles - Children
Nightcrawlers - Push The Feeling On
Real McCoy - Another Night
Robin S - Show Me Love [Stonebridge Mix]
Ultra Nate - Free

Songs From 2004 On Energy 92.7

They have added a lot during the last few weeks, so more should be coming soon. A few national and international hits have been added. That new Wynonna track is awesome. There probably isn't too many other stations in California playing this song, but that could change. In terms of the bay area, Energy 92.7 is the only one playing the song in this version. Country stations might be playing the normal one. Also, the Destiny's Child track "Lose My Breath" is doing really well on radio and cable television all over the country and all over the world. In the bay area alone, one could tune into various stations during any given hour and the song would come on. It's a hot one right now. The international hit "Lola's Theme" by Shapeshifters:UK has just been added. This track is only played on Wild 94.9 during House Nation. Lasgo's latest single "Surrender" is getting a good amount of airplay as well. There are not too many trance songs played on mainstream radio. At least not at this time. Back in 2000 and 2001, Alice Deejay, Eiffel 65, Sonique, Miss Jane, ATB, Gigi D'Agostino, DJ Jean, Darude, and other artists were getting a significant amount of radio airplay all over the country. Even some video play on the television music channels. Will this ever happen again? Hopefully yes. Right now, dance-leaning hip hop is in. Tracks like "Naughty Girl" by Beyonce, "Scandalous" by Mis-Teeq, and "Dip It Low" by Christina Milian are big hits this year. "Move Your Body" by Nina Sky & Jabba has been a massive hit all over the country. And it's still hot now several months after it's initial release. Let's hope this is the start of a new trend in R&B/Hip Hop music.

Songs That Need To Be Played On Dance Radio Here

There are many dance songs which have gotten little to no play on a regular radio station. Wild 94.9 used to break all the hot new dance records within their mixes, and sometimes even during regular airplay. They still do on House Nation, but there are not too many people who are up from 1am to 6am (Pacific Time) to listen. But, considering the music and the DJs they have playing the music every week, one would make an effort to listen. Live 105 plays electronica music on their Saturday night show Subsonic, but they don't play everything. There are college stations that play some dance music, like KSCU 103.3, and KSJS 90.5.

There is a dance station in the bay area, but they have not added a lot of these new songs for regular airplay. It would be great if these new songs would be added.

Angel City featuring Lara McKellen - Touch Me

Energy 92.7 vs Wild 94.9

Since this station signed on over a month ago (approximately at 7pm on October 2, 2004), dance music is being heard again in the Bay Area. They began with the 5000 dance songs of all time. A wide variety of house, disco, 80's freestyle, pop, and even a bit of trance rounded out the first two weeks of Energy 92.7. A wide variety of songs was heard during this time, and brought back great memories of what was once dance radio.

Energy 92.7 started in regular programming soon after. Current and recurrent songs have been mixed in with older tracks. There's a great selection of classic tracks and international big hits. One of the great things is that Energy 92.7 does not have any commercials yet. However, that may change. Now, some listeners may have to get accustomed to hearing commercials again.

As Energy 92.7 has started up, barely five months after Party 92.7 ended, popular radio station Wild 94.9 has begun playing more dance music in the mixes. For awhile, there was only one thirty minute, uninterupted block of continous mixing in Jose Melendez's "Wild Workout At Noon", now that has changed and there are two continous blocks everyday. Although, both halfs are not quite 30 minutes a piece, it doesn't really matter as the dance music is back.

Withing days of Energy's beginning, classic tracks which have had little to no play for the last one to two years have made a come-back to Wild 94.9. Wild 94.9 exclusives like "Professional Widow [Armand Ven Helden Mix]" by Tori Amos, "In De Ghetto" by Bad Yard Club, and "Around The World" by Daft Punk are back on the air waves. Other classics are back too.

Latin house, 80's freestyle, and some trance is making up a significant portion of Wild 94.9's mixshow playlist. Alice Deejay's "Better Off Alone", Sonique's "It Feels So Good", "Sandstorm" by Darude, and "Toca's Miracle" by Fragma are just some trance songs which haven't been played on Wild in over two years (within regular mixshows). These can be heard almost daily. This is a great change for the station.

Could this be the start of competition between Wild 94.9 and Energy 92.7? We'll find out soon.

Bay Area Dance Radio

In the San Francisco Bay Area, there have been many dance music radio stations that have come along and have not managed to make a lasting impression. Although, these few have been quite revolutionary, there hasn't been one pure dance music oriented station that has lasted for too long.

This blog is dedicated to discussing dance radio in the bay area, past, present, and future.
